These elections, all of us should be telling Political parties that espouse values of secularism to walk the talk and not get taken by the “we are good and they are bad” nonsense.  The fact is all our Political parties have stained pasts and blood on their hands! Do you agree?

Very true.. all the major political parties in our country have past records which they cannot be proud of.. But there will always be this dilemma during voting, do you vote for a candidate who seems to be clean and honest (but has no chance of winning) or do you vote for a candidate who has a muddied past (but is in a way better than a candidate of the rival major party)?.. I mean, if you do vote for the former, then there is a good chance that the candidate of the rival major party with a worse record will win.. Hope Im clear..

It depends on what  you want your vote to represent. If it’s a vote of protest then you vote for a candidate who is good but has no chance of winning …(im not such a fan of this!) , else you vote for the person who outlines actions either for your city or country ! there are many protestors in our country (talk talk talk) and there are precious few who actually get down to make change happen…so vote for the latter, even if he belongs to a party !

I agree with you, Sir. Both major parties (Cong and BJP) have blood on their hands - 1984 Delhi and Godhra riots. Regional parties are nothing more than opportunistic parties without any strong national agenda.

All parties and all elections give a Deja-Vu kind of feeling. You have hate speeches, criminals contesting and winning elections, no or non-sense manifesto, lot of money exchanging hands and parties dividing people over caste and religion.

Lot of good and intelligent people like Capt Gopinath are contesting elections and it is a good begining but still a long way to go.

True .. every party seems to have a stained past .. Everyone from the local politician to higher officials seem to have been in some kind of trouble with the law at one point or the other. The very fact that blood has to be spilt to prove a few points is disgusting ..

But i agree that no one can proclaim themselves to be "good" or "bad". They just have to do the right thing for the country. We have already had a good start being close to world leaders in a few disciplines. Now, we need a government who can capitalize on this start and get India to a place of strength. sometimes I think we need good businessmen who love their country and not just politicians :).

As you said, we being secular, using religion, caste, creed etc to fight a political campaign is utter nonsense! India is a secular country and none of these should be issues.. we call ourselves secular because we have already made that decision to accept every persons  god come what may.. and politicians abusing about this issue is a direct insult to everyone in secular India!

I disagree!  If we were secular, then the politicians using these issues would not have been able to exploit them.  We are hypocritical and in love with the image of being noble, secular and fair.  That is why these netas succeed in their divisive goals

Our constitution guarantees that ‘Governments’ and Government/state institutions have to be secular…But successive governments in the name of affirmative action and equal opportunity have chipped away at this through caste and most dangerous religious reservations! The court has actually in the AP governments case struck down reservations on religious grounds as anti constitutional! That apart – the problem off course is most Indians and therefore most political parties are increasingly seeing themselves through their religious or caste identities..It is this that the politician is exploiting. So yes in a way ‘we’ as a people have departed from what our founding fathers had in mind for us – which was an identity primarily of an Indian and all else after..now it seems its all else first and Indian later..! tragic but true..

Yes, every political party has a stained past. Either by actively engaging in violence and rioting or by remaining silent bystanders.

What hurts me about this election though, is that nobody is talking about what will their government do to improve the overall infrastructure of the country. Education at various levels-- primary to specialised,  how will that improve? Road, electricity, other agriculture supporting infra such as cold-storage, fast track export clearance, these issues are completely missing. China has ensured accesbility of good quality primary education to its population from the wealthiest to the poor. Now, it is already in the process of creating world-class universities. Our politicians are only talking about 1984, ,1999, 2002 and November 2006. Nobody is talking about India in 2014. Where is the promise to provide good quality education? And the blueprint to achieve this promise? Many more such issues persist. Only making manifestos and speeches doesn't solve problems.

I agree with you VInay. The disappointing aspect of this election is the extent of negative rhetoric and attacks. I really believe this election should be and is a referendum on the performance of one government and these kind of elections should always be a report card assessment. If you think the government has done well, you should elect them back or if you think they haven’t – they must be denied another chance. I personally believe and I have said this publicly that this Government has been a disastrous failure and should not be given another bite of the apple.! But instead of an analysis of the government being the agenda, the media and too many people are deliberately distracting us into all kinds of other areas…Tragic but true again ..!

You have been a parlimentrian yourself.  What do you feel about it?

There was report which was carried out by DNA Mumbai which said that there are people who are creating political "never known" parties to save on tax exemption.

When you say stain, it should not only be blood. It should also include the economic crisis, political unrest, giving election tickets to criminal etc.

My thoughts are as Ive written it..I think political parties use hype and rhetoric to distract people from the main topics and challenges that face us..

I agree. That is why they have such bloated manifestos. These are the good promises they make which may never see the light of the day.

Any Indian grows up thinking that either he get into politics (not contesting et all) or stay away as far as he can. There are reasons every one knows. You take up a social cause and gather a crowd, you get beaten by the police. If you do a satyagraha, you are attempting a sucide.

The Court leaves a guilty to roam free on a bond paper. Criminals get to stand in Elections.

All these is visible. But out of 100, 98 times people ignore this coz it may hurt them, physically or mentally. They do not take up any thing because their voice is supressed.
