Freedom of speech!

We've been seeing instances where people who dared to express their views against the common ones being outcasted..sometimes punished..

be it the famous blog post by Gaurav Sabnis on IIPM..or the one blogger against Burkha Dutta..the latest one Abdul Emam arrested in Bahrain...

well at this juncture I would like to mention about this blogpost by our fellow indiblogger "Uncommon Sense" in which he talks about freedom of speech..It really made me think over twice what are we intending when we say we are being stripped off our rights..

Now if people dont consider it to be a spam..I shall post his blogpost link also here..

FREEDOM OF SPEECH, :  with limitations,

communal harmony should not be affected at any cost.

big, or people in high posts sud be more careful.

right communal harmony shldnt be affected...teh cartoons by the Danish cartoonist which was condemned by muslim fraternity all over the world...some people supported him by saying..it was severing the right to express...now I am wondering do people understand the difference between right to express to right to hurt someone...

Same goes with the 'cartoons' created by MF hussain!!

Unknown

oops Himanshu..I missed ur post... u r right.. the paintings of  MF..now u call it creativity..or a means to spread hatred..I dont know..a simple analogy..if someone draws a vulgar picture of someone else's mother in a compromising pose..does that son/daughter of the mother will appreciate it as a piece of creativity..or hit him black n blue..

now if the painter and the someone..both subscribe to the same school of thoughts..then it is not a problem..but if it is not thats when the problem comes..and that is wat the so called liberal/openminded artists dont be in congruence with

absolutely, right,

media, news, etc, need sensational news, poor people r victims,

words, very dangerous in unworthy hands,

laws should be severe  to curb this  menace.

I don't know where the solutiuon lies.

it has encompassed the whole world.

freedom of speech is an absolute necessity  for a democracy to survive. But  accountability should also be there.Without accountability freedom of speech will be used to make false allegations and to create sensationalism also  if someone is making an allegation against someone then the other person has also every right to challenge  that allegation, of course staying within limits of law.

Unknown

oh my friend.. i was waitin for u to write :)..sensationalism ..i dont know if it is only thing that inspires everyone who stirs contrversies with their writings..

from when  my comments started to matter so much to others?Surprised I'm not saying all controversies are for sensationalism. Some truth are sensational but true also. Those shouldn't be seen as sensationalism.Just like the wikileaks documents. But some people use freedom of speech as a tool for publicity.Like vivek oberoi. One night he calls the press and makes allegation against salman khan and see now.

economic times says reliance is taking over a company, buy, that too is delisted.

@Pramod bhai u r right about media..peepli live bore a testimony to media's maya..

There needs to be some protocol in place on how matters have to be dealt, considering the sentiments of general public for the greater good.

in this age of web2.0,internet where information is passed in a jiffy..where bloggers are citizen journalists/reporters of news...dont you think even we have to have be responsible ...and follow some kind of protocol..

or do u think..thats all trash..cos it is defeating the purpose of blogging/freedom of speech

@Unknown bhai, the age is changing, but what i feel is it's like uunt ke munh me jeera,

(very miniscule,)

my freedom to punch stops where other person's nose starts, should be the rule,

strict norms r necessary  because in blog we can write anything we like,

it can be done like this also, "stop giving any importance to such writings,

stop acknowledging them in the first place .

they will die their natural death.

Crazy Laws in Nevada

  • Everyone walking the streets is required to wear a mask in Elko, Nevada.
  • Sex without a condom is considered illegal.
  • Men who wear mustaches are forbidden from kissing women, in Eureka
  • Back in the old days, a man caught beating his wife was tied to a stake for eight hours a day with a sign that read, "Wife Beater" fastened to his chest.

kinnos

the people and media should be aware of their own responsibilities.Otherwise no protocol and no law can help. You see 100 laws can be made but some people will always  find some way to bypass the law.We should also be be careful about choosing about our source of information. we have to be careful while deciding, whom to listen and whom to ignore. some news channels take help of background music and film clips to present their news and I think that exaggerates the importance of some news.Whereas the job of news channel is just to show the news and allow the people to decide how important it is? but people still watch those kind of news channels and help them to earn more revenue. So we basically ourselves are the problem. We are yet to learn the difference between entertainment and news.We expect the news channel to entertain us.The irony is today we entertain ourselves by watching news channels and we learn about our responsibilities by watching  movies like Taare Zameen Par and 3 idiots. Having said all against media I also believe in last decade news media and web 2.0 has helped us a lot to make our country better.Earlier only celebrities had the luxury of speaking their mind  through  news channels and other mediums and  those medium were not available to common people. But today even a common man can speak his/her heart through various platforms. The shahraukh khan vs shiv sena can be taken as a classic example of empowerment of common man through social media.

@Bhai this is one is "my freedom to punch stops where other person's nose starts, should be the rule," is nice...

ya right stop acknowledging..if everyone does yes...but if that is the case then why are those who stirred controversies been pushed behind bars?..

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@Kinnos... now thats the tricky part..when we say."aware of their own responsibilities".. who defines that.. the individual..now there is no control..cos each one has his own way of deinition..and he says he is within his ethical boundaries..

now usage of clips, music is their way of presenting..like how we put images in our blog..so nothing against it.. but considering the people who listen to us..the wider spectrum to which we have access to is more important..

and again should we go purely by majority...like say...if greater number of people believe in whatever the information is being propogated..do u think that info is correct?

kinnos
from Bhubaneswar

@unknown  self discipline can only be applied by own self.It can't be generalized.also I was talking about minimal amount of self responsibility like when I'm using my freedom of speech I should be careful that I'm saying the truth, not just making false allegation to catch attention and also  as said by everybody  one should take care to not to hurt other unnecessarily. Now there can be special cases where you have to stand with truth against the cost of hurting others, for that kind of situation.I' have no answers.

I respect your views but I personally believe news channel shouldn't use back ground music and special effects (not talking about graphical presentation) to news unless the news is related to entertainment.

Truth is truth it has no majority and minority. It's up to individual to decide whether he/she wants to go with majority or truth.

@ kinnos,

I wish to please say that truth told with bad intent, is worse.

there r many truths  going on every second & if media hypes it & riots start , only we poor humans suffer.

blood is same in everyone.

communal harmony should be main.

politicians or media any one playing with it should be punished harshly.

in china they hve a saying . kill one to warn 100,

please think on it. deeply.

kinnos
from Bhubaneswar

@ Pramod Lohia

I agree. Truth+bad intention= manipulation.And manipulation can't be good .

This post for me is all about looking at freedom of speech  as tool to make society a better place to live not to empty it.freedom of speech should never be used as a tool for massacre. And thats why I talked about self discipline.

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@Kinnos u r not getting my point...when something is left to individual to decide..about the minimal..that is where the prob..we dont have a yardstick which tells each one ok..this is the limit..so each one has his own way...some will think somthing is right..and for someone else it might be offending.. I know am talking vaguely..but i dont know how to express that

kinnos
from Bhubaneswar

@unknown no worry.I'm also very bad at expressing.and you are far better than me.

Up to a point law can help.I mean if I'm making a derogatory remark against you then you can take help  of law to act against me.Personally  I feel  this world is a fun place to live because we all see things differently. If we all will start to see things same way then I guess this world will be boring. Also it is not like that we can't co exist with our differences. The solution will respecting other people right to disagree.

I for sure am not as intelligent or intellectual like you guys over here. That's the reason I generally avoid poking my nose into serious discussions like this. But I don't know why I am unable to resist expressing my humble views in this thread.

Hey Aparichithudu (Unknown) :) This comment is mostly with respect to the link you posted. I think the rule is quite simple:

You have the right to do anything does not mean that you can go around slapping people. The same applies to the freedom of speech as well. You have the right to say anything does not mean that you can go around abusing people.

I agree with the post only to the extent that we should be more tolerant towards comments and disagreements in/on our religions.

I do admire the author for his intellect but definitely do not subscribe to his concept of 'total freedom' the way he means. I am 100% clear on that.

The problem with we the younger generation is that we consider ourselves 'know all' guys and do not think twice to discount the intellegence of our ancestors. The way the society is built.. the systems are put in place.. is definitely not a result of 10 minute meeting or a week long discussion on a blog or a virtual forum. It must have taken something more serious.

I also read other posts on the blog. I am not quite sure if they describe the author's actual lifestyle. But if they do, I do not subscribe to that way of living either b'coz I feel if everbody starts living that way, the basic structure of the society will come crumbling down. There will be no faith in family, friends and society. Life will become boring, meaningless and lonely... Suicide rates will shoot up. All this again with due respect to the author's intellect.

first of all.. really appreciate the humble opinion...that really counts..

secondly am sorry for the goof up..i dint know how to embed a link..learnt later...so u wld have ended up on my blog first..

now coming to points..

1) very well...said..somethign rhymes with what @Pramod bhai said..about the punch.. basically striking a balance between  right to speak to right to hurt

2) yes even I agree to that point..his intentions might be good the method is not acceptable by many

3) If you had a look at the comments...u will see a debate [dont say it heated..but  it is]

4)This is something which I cant agree more..and I always say that..our ancestors are no crooks..and whatever practices, rules, norms we have had.. there is always some method in the madness

5)Well the author has justified himself on that part saying he wont constrain himself in expressing to what others think..so people who think alike follow..and I am not supporting his style nor against.. but am very particular about this very post..on which he has put forward his arguments..

@ gouri,  "eye for an eye " this rule will render every body blind,

there r religious fanatics, in every religion,

as per my knowledge, people ruled by saturn , deeply religiuos people, ready to kill and die,

for religion.

a demarcation line has to be drawn and peple who can think of each other as human ,.before religion,  sud be allowed ,. and each other should be compulsorily sent in the army, to fight for the country or somewhere.

gade hue murdon ki raajneeti, a shame.

this person has accomplished one thing, he got read allover and gained cheap populartity,

use of intellect to spread venom, ???

i have a box of toffees, & i give somebody, ,he refuses to take it, it remains with me,

its likewise with the writer too.

religious fanatics..yes @bhai..right..the imams, priests, babas godmans..all are there..most of them are chors..who crave for power in the name of religion n GOD.. now these guys are there in current times..but religion has been there for centuries..now the hatred on them shouldnt be shown on religion..which sadly many people do.. attributing their crimes to religion...

religion and preachings have been interpreted abused by different people in different ways..just for their benefits in terms of money n power

When Mohan talked of MLM, I got reminded of this post I read early this year. It was on a particular money circulation kind of scheme... It has received more than 300 comments.. Comments by vested interests (company people and those who have already fallen for the trap) make a good read... It was so hot that time that when I posted a comment, I received a very aggressive reply almost immediately. Here are my comments on the post:

Now I have given up cos..I feel his points have lost strength..his replies are more backed with foolishness..and I really wonder about people who appreciate his content..more than half of them wld be faking..as hypocrites..agreeing to whatever he says..I hate those people more ..who dont have their own opinion but just take things for granted...
