Match Fixing in cricket ? debate

I believe match fixing is possible in all sports, particularly where there is huge fan following and media coverage.  When cricket betting is legal in England and Australia, why it is considered illegal in India beats me.  Just imagine the time wasted in investigations on cricket betting by CBI and other agencies.  If gold imports with low taxation is legitimate, horse racing betting is allowed, casino's are thriving in Goa, etc why cricket is out of the ambit of betting ?  Bishen singh Bedi is the first one to officially to call for betting to be legalised with all controls in place.  Match fixing in cricket needs to rooted out so that the game is kept clean.  But with the vagaries of the game result, one would always suspect that the matches are fixed.  What is the way out.  Legalising betting is one way out debate guys.

but Umeshji, how will legalized betting, even if it is approved and done like horse racing betting,  help weed out match-fixing? It's the fans who'd bet mostly, and if it is taken too seriously, can lead to more match-fixing na? the bet maker who wants to make sure he'd win can try and influence the match somehow?

Yes there is a possibility of match fixing with betting being legal, at least we get the monkey menace of dicussion on betting.  It can be experimented in IPL which does not count for official stats of a player.  Remember once upon a time due high rate of customs duty Gold used to be smuggled, but now there is no need to smuggle with marginal texation.

Oh with IPL, that betting part is gonna come sooner or later. It's so financially based that the IPL Organizing Committee will definitely think of that I feel. But I hope it doesn't come to that state that it leads to IPL fixing. A cricketer's reputation is still at stake, be it stats official or not...

One cannot rule out match fixing or tanking in IPL considering the comercial consideration.  Basically it is played for fun and to galleries rather than real competitive gaming.  But this bunch of cricketers should be kept away from the official game of cricket one and tests is my contention.

Those who play in IPL not play in Indian team? That's a non possibility. It'll be like ICL, and the players like Ambati Rayudu and R. Satish who are impressive were denied national selection for future then. That'd be worse than match fixing.. It'll be like team fixing.

Tho I agree that IPL batters the national side with injuries and what not, keeping the players separate is something that's very less likely to happen I feel.

Ideally IPL should be declared commercial and it should be kept seperate from regular cricket.  In the interest of the game to avoid match fixing, decline in the talent for traditional format of the game, it is better to have seperate entities.  Otherwise these fixers will spoil the regular format of the game too

Why a declaration of the obvious, Umesh ji? Though there are fans of IPL and that is quite right, since t is cricket, and India is a cricket crazy nation, no one can deny that it is commercial, and the money that flows in is ridiculously high and waste at times. The recent auction where Vinay Kumar & Jadeja fetched obscene amounts proves that too. but it has brought some good players to the fore, like the likes of Ojha and Ashwin among others! Some good has happened.

I agree though, that these players are still to prove Test mettle, but keeping them away from the Test team won't be right, for they can gel with the national squad. Keep the betting, like I said before, it would come sooner rather than later, but if that affect ONLY IPL, then well and good, if it affect National side, the players in question can be thrown out, not before then.
