Does Facebook allow auto adding of friends ? Pl clarify

I was surprised that some members are auto added into my circle, did you experience the same guys, that means our privacy is not guaranteed by this feature in Facebook ?  Google to has allowed auto adding, it has virtually become a spam in google plus with unknown ids entering into my circle, i am grappling how to stop unecessary feeds from Tom **** and Harries.
