A white paper and black pen is good contrast for eyes
My advices-
1. A socialize button under posts so that readers can share what they like in any media
2. Adding more widgets on the right sidebar - Popular post, most read etc.
3. A small banner that will brand your blog.
4. Maximum 3-4 post on home page or put read more option.

This is much like a creative personal blog now. I like the larger fonts and plain background soothing the eyes. And The popular post and author profile on site bar looking good as well.
I too used black background on my medical blog before and got similar comments, just sharing my experience :)
