A true riddle is one that compares two unnrelated things in a metaphorical manner and is usually verbal, either written or spoken, deliberately phrased in such a way as to baffle and puzzle the reader or listener, sometimes prefixed by an interrogative formula such as ' Riddle me, riddle me re'.
