You can disable the right click button but it comes up with bad user experiences...the best way is to first contact the webmaster who is copying your content, and ask him/her nicely to remove the post or give proper credit to the actual source...if it does not go well then you can file a DMCA complaint too with your proof...

In fact there is no way. Even if you disable right click, it can be enabled and then no one can prevent screenhots.

Aditya there is no way to stop copying except complaining to google if its a blogger

You can disable right click and protect your source code to make the task of copying much harder...screenshot is an option, but if someone is so dedicated in copying then it is hard to stop him..by the way Vijay he can still complain to Google even if he is not using blogger

But the fact is there is no way to stop the process...bt Google algo is getting smarter, and if you are having a good author rank then your contents will be receiving good results..so dont bother much about copying..just do your bit, and add a creative common license to your blog contents

how to find good author rank??? is it same as gpr???

Ranjith

Authorship of content and gpr is different. GPR depends on the number of links to a page. Author Rank is not yet implemented ( I think ). If implemented it will depend on some factors which revolve around the articles written by you on the internet irrespective of the site on which you have written those articles.

@N.D- Just go to this link..u'll have a basic idea about Author rank, how to improve it, and how it is different from GPR- http://www.mybloggertricks.com/2013/01/what-is-google-authorrank-how-exactly.html

Have you added authoship to your blog? Does your pic appear right below your content in the Google search results? If not then add it right now...

Aditya, wondering why you said disabling right click leads to bad user experience. I have done the same, and have read elsewhere that its a bad user experience, but never elaborated on.

Ranjith

Stagg Mann : I personally don't like blogs with right click disabled. Many times, I select text on the web page, right click and Select 'Search Google for .... ' That won't work if right click is disabled. Also, you can't right click on a link and select 'Open in a new tab' ( Yes, the CTRL key is there but I prefer the mouse sometimes ) There may be many more things like this.

And, if someone is determined to copy, they can disable JS and copy....

mine right click is disabled and lifting off texts/images from my site has reduced almost 90%.... earlier everything used to be lifted off when i checked tynt.com

Ranjith, you have a point with regards to user experience. But I never used javascript, I wrote a line of code into HTML (copied from somewhere of course). And in case of rightclicking to open a link, my links open in a new tab anyway. But anyway I have enabled rightclick again. Though the drag option is still disabled- the one where you hold down the left mouse button to highlight text.

Stagg, you cannot disable right click without using JavaScript.

@ SM The code you used was JavaScript Wink

@Ranjith- Don't tell meSurprised. That return on context menu = false waala line is JS? I got that off a webpage titled "how to disable rightclick without using JS"Yell

SM - The code to disable does not work on IE 9 and on Chrome. I am able to do a right click.

@Ranjith - this JS also makes copying content difficult, you cannot do it but still click links.

<script type="text/javascript">(function() { var b=window,e="jstiming",g="tick";(function(){function d(a){this.t={};this.tick=function(a,d,c){c=void 0!=c?c:(new Date).getTime();this.t[a]=[c,d]};this[g]("start",null,a)}var a=new d;b.jstiming={Timer:d,load:a};if(b.performance&&b.performance.timing){var a=b.performance.timing,c=b[e].load,f=a.navigationStart,a=a.responseStart;0<f&&a>=f&&(c[g]("_wtsrt",void 0,f),c[g]("wtsrt_","_wtsrt",a),c[g]("tbsd_","wtsrt_"))}try{a=null,b.chrome&&b.chrome.csi&&(a=Math.floor(b.chrome.csi().pageT),c&&0<f&&(c[g]("_tbnd",void 0,b.chrome.csi().startE),c[g]("tbnd_","_tbnd",f))),null==a&&b.gtbExternal&&(a=b.gtbExternal.pageT()),null==a&&b.external&&(a=b.external.pageT,c&&0<f&&(c[g]("_tbnd",void 0,b.external.startE),c[g]("tbnd_","_tbnd",f))),a&&(b[e].pt=a)}catch(l){}})();b.tickAboveFold=function(d){var a=0;if(d.offsetParent){do a+=d.offsetTop;while(d=d.offsetParent)}d=a;750>=d&&b[e].load[g]("aft")};var h=!1;function k(){h||(h=!0,b[e].load[g]("firstScrollTime"))}b.addEventListener?b.addEventListener("scroll",k,!1):b.attachEvent("onscroll",k); })();</script>

<script type="text/javascript">var a=navigator,b="userAgent",c="indexOf",f="&m=1",g="(^|&)m=",h="?",k="?m=1";function l(){var d=window.location.href,e=d.split(h);switch(e.length){case 1:return d+k;case 2:return 0<=e[1].search(g)?null:d+f;default:return null}}if(-1!=a[b][c]("Mobile")&&-1!=a[b][c]("WebKit")&&-1==a[b][c]("iPad")||-1!=a[b][c]("Opera Mini")||-1!=a[b][c]("IEMobile")){var m=l();m&&window.location.replace(m)};</script><script type="text/javascript">if (window.jstiming) window.jstiming.load.tick('headEnd');</script></head><body class='loading' ondragstart='return false' onselectstart='return false'>

Any thoughts on how to reuse this?

Hemal Shah

Oops! @Ranjith The JS is not needed.. cant edit my entry now, else could have removed it.. Ignore the JS... Just add the following to your body and you cannot try to select your content.. You cannot select it...

<body ondragstart='return false' onselectstart='return false'>

However, you can go to the view source and still copy text.. It is still not fool-proof yet but a good way to not letting people to select the text. This does not help for images, as you can still right click and save images. For Images, we can probably use a Div layer mask...

Partha nothing can stop anybody from copying but if you wish here is a tutorial for disabling the right click

http://www.bloggertipandtrick.net/how-to-disable-right-click-in/

Hemal Shah

Disabling right click does not disable CTRL + C! It only disables the right click context menu.

If i select text and do a CTRL + C, the content is copied already - disabling right click will never help.

Ranjith
from hyderabad

Hemal, we should disable text selection also. Do you know any method? Wink

Hemal Shah
from Mumbai

Only way to do that is by Div Layer masking.. you put a layer above the content.. every time you try to copy, you are trying to copy the Div layer and not the content..

However this will mean you cannot click on links though..

I'm not sure if this will help to get rid of copycats or not but at least you'll be recognized as the owner of your writing by linking your blog with your Google+ profile. ANd in search results, a small profile pic will be displayed next to your link

And yes, I have registered with the Creative Commons for CC 3.0 license (no copying, editing only sharing with credit) and Copyscape. I am not sure how effective they are but these are the only ways I know

Plagrism is something that we all have to deal with. Many a times, these sites are fake and just aggregators. They use your RSS feed and publish the data copied from your blog as it is.

Best way to takle these aggregators is to use a feed comment which declares that this post is originally hosted on so and so link. On Wordpress you can do that using "© Feed" Plugin.

Additionally, you can also put up a DMCA protected logo on your site to say your content is protected. This may deter them from doing so. A example will be my own blog.

For those Sourav Pandeys who manually copy your content and post it as theirs, the only respite is you file a complaint with Google and DMCA.

@ND Thanks..but Tynt can't be used in Wordpress.com site...bad luck

Ranjith

@ PS You can use it. You will have to add that JS code to your template. In fact, it can be used on every web page and platform.

.

My Kaspersky mistook Tynt to be a spam site and blocked it. Foot in mouth

Ranjith

Ignore my previous reply. I was talking about Self Hosted Wordpress.

But, isn't it an easy thing to make a plugin for Tynt so that it can be used on wp.com sites also? Innocent

Hemal Shah

As i said earlier, Tynt wont help.

Nandini, Tynt helps to add the URL of the page to the manually copied content. But someone with wrong intentions would just remove link like a who-cares attitude.

hemal ...tynt wont stop...but it gives an idea what and how much is copied....though i'd like it to more expanded details.

Ranjith I asked this on WP site help...they are saying for wp.com it can;t be disabled. only for wp.org. There r only two themes in wp.com that can disable right click..

Hemal Shah

That is coz Wordpress.com limits the usage of JavaScript.

Ranjith

All these days, I thought that official plugins are allowed on wp.com. Foot in mouth And just 287 themes for wp.com? I didn't knew these things till now... Innocent

Starting a new post to avoid confusion.

Okay, so some of my myths were busted.

  1. You can disable right click by not using JavaScript
  2. You can disable text selection (CTRL + A)
  3. You can disable dragging and selection

To disable right click, add this to your BODY Tag

  • <body oncontextmenu="return false;">

To disable Text Selection, add this to your BODY Tag

  • <body onselectstart="return false;">

To disable Dragging Selection, add this to your BODY Tag

  • <body ondragstart="return false;">

To do all three, or any two, do the following.

  • <body oncontextmenu="return false;" ondragstart="return false;" onselectstart="return false;">

This will not mean that you can disable all means to copy the content, but only help in delay. The following are the other means for peole to copy and some tips on what can you do about it.

  1. View Source of the page
    • This is a easily accessible method to copy.
    • You can try to minify the HTML (reduce any extra space) to make it difficult.
    • You can use encryption using basic methods
    • You can use JavaScript to encrypt your HTML - however with JS disabled this will not work.
  2. Offline Website Readers / Website Downloaders
    • Another method which allows to download your entire site, including themes
    • You can set your server to not allow such automated downloads by disabling bots. I am still not aware how to do this, but if Google can do it for their servers, we too should be able to :)
