Blogging Ethics

A few quick points (got to go to the office!). Others can add ...

  1. Respect the blogger's view. Even if you disagree. After all it is his/her blog.
  2. If some one laves a comment, always respond - either by a simple thankyou mail or a reciprocal comment.
  3. Be a good citizen of the blogosphere. All laws of politeness in ordinary conversation applies to blogs too.
  4. Always acknowledge source. Nothing puts off readers when they come across plagiarized material.
  5. Always add value to a reported material. A copy and paste or a series of links is no good. Be a blogger not an aggregator.

Shall add more ...

Cheers! Churn-news

Pratibha and Amitabh, this is about commentators leaving links. I do not mind it if it adds to the post and the blogger leaves a comment. If the blogger simply comes to my blog to leave a link I find it rude. One needs to leave a proper comment which means giving one's opinion in detail, and then one can leave a link to one's post if it is relevant and it is a good post. However I find that there are some bloggers who only visit blogs to advertise themselves and I find this offensive too. It is very easy to see who these bloggers are because they leave a link to their posts in most of their comments. The aim of visting a blog should be to give one's opinion and/or join the discussion, not try and divert people to one's own blog! But ofcourse these things are very personal and some bloggers do not mind anything.

Also, if one is really interested in adding value to a post, it's best to leave a link to a good article by a well known writer on a news site or some other valuable link.

I want to mention an important aspect of blogging. It has already been mentioned by Amitabh, when he says add value to the links you provide. I just want to take this a little further by saying that often news articles and statistics are presented in a confusing way in a report. Confusing for a person who has little time to go through it and for someone for whom the whole report may not be relevant. A blogger who reads through the whole report, manages to pick out the important points, and presents the statistics in a simple way always is doing a service to the readers. I know this means a lot of work and a lot of reading but this is one of the ways one can provide value to readers.

good set of blog ethics posted here.

The list is comprehensive but not exhaustive.I m sure more would be added here in times to come.

I have seen some bloggers copying professional material from reference books and others blogs and posting it on the bliog just to increase traffic on google ad sense.that's unethical too.

I have a problem with this.

Iam sure you will not agree , so lets agree to disagree.

Thing is, making rules in something as spontaneous as writing a weblog will interfer with creativity...Now lets consider that Iam a very rude person. Thats the way I would like to market myself. Therefore inorder for me to stay in character with my rude persona , I will invariably have to be rude. This will mean that I dont respond to comments, will not care for anyones opinions etc...this will probably make some hate me, but then that could be my marketing ploy...

see where Iam going with this?...i think blogsphere is like the world outside, we would all like to influence some control over it but in reality it will function exactly the way it wants to...you will still find people who will not thankyou for holding the door open...i think thats the beauty of it...

so i dont think there should be any sort of ethics...it will sort itself out in the end, since there is a primary need to be read that makes people blog in the first place...so ultimately you would only behave in ways that will get you read...so my take is **** ethics, just blog..

Nice blogging rules we have here. Can we have some pledge kind of a thing, which all the Inidbloggers should take while attending the indiblogger meets.

That should help to reinstate the feeling. "Blogging - Code of Ethics"

@Amitabh Mukherjee Very well said Amitabh. A blogger must come with his only fresh ideas and let people to have their reactions.

Blogging a very nice tool to learn and to share ideas with others. So, always be specific while blogging.

I am delighted to see this topic. Thanks for sharing :)

My question is, what ethics says if people do not comment properly on your post, I mean leg-pulling, poiting out things - sometimes they are just annoying. What should we do to such people ?

not exactly an ethical issue but please use the paragraph efficiently... I find huuge paragraphs a big turn off... I often end up not reading them

Agreed, lengthy paragarphs are big turn off.
