Can Indibloggers have a Desi version of the Rasberries dedicated to the Media?
******Disclousre - I am a newb to Indiblogger. Please forgive my inclination to create a topic even before the water dries behind my ears.******
Should Indibloggers run a set of Awards for the media on the lines of the Ignoble Awards of the Golden Rasberry Awards?
One of the (many) reasons why blogs are rising in popularity is that they present a good alternative to the mainstream media. A lot of the genuine political commentary, for example, does not find a space in the mainstream media (personal opinion). You do however find it (sometimes not so easily) on the blogging networks. The mainstream media is also leveraging Web 2.0 (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook etc). Some of them are making good Astroturf (fake ground support) others are just proving to be big Twits (pun intended).I was wondering if it would be appropriate for Indibloggers to vote for the worst in media (like the ignoble or raspberries). An example of categories could be –
- A “Chihuahua award” for the journalist who barks the most but has the least bite.
- A “Reprint Award” award for the channel that lifts the worst headline stories of social networking sites
- A “Unfair and Ugly award” for the most baseless ad-campaign
We could have maybe five categories in all, that poke some real sarcastic fun at the media and the way they behave. We could synch this with the annual awards that many media houses now have. Theie wards typicall recognize stuff like “Indian of the year” and “businessmen of the year” which is turning out to be nothing more than applications for a Padma Award or a reciprocator for Advertising revenue. From the little that I have seen of Indibloggers, as a collective it is very effective at getting positive visibility for quality content. I want to suggest that we take this a step further and look outward as well. What’s in it for Indiblogger? More eyeballs for the community, which translates to more eyeballs for blogs.
How would it work?
- The community nominates a group of people to develop the categories.
- The community nominates to the category
- The community and the general public vote for each of the categories
- From start to finish it should take about 3 months to execute (my uneducated guess).
Any thoughts?Anand
Ha ha.. it's a shame that topics like these get buried before anyone sees them. I love the idea actually - what do the other's think?
Hey, I am a bit confused.
Anand, are you asking to give these awards to mainstream media?
If it is, I think that is a good idea as I love Media bashing
Hey Renie, if a committee is formed to nominate, count me in for sure. I'll start with India TV!
Vipul
Bang on - the Idea is that Indiblogger nominates the folks based on votes from the Internal community.
The nominations then are thrown open to the general public for voting.
The key, in my opinion is to keep the awards sarcastic and dunny without losing the intent - i.e. influence the mainstream media to get their act together.
If we can generate some footfalls for indiblogger it would be an impact that we would be happy to have
Anand
The reason I am replying to your post directly is simple I am in love with your idea...I would also love to be a part of this initiative. Please count me in and send me a mail, if you are considering a board of nominators/ judges.
