You can count me as an avid reader. If by the the end of the day, I do not find an hour to lie down and read a novel, I get nightmares of that book's characters becoming zombies and running after my life. So yes Brown potato (btw a very nice name) I love reading novels, especially fictions. I am active over goodreads, but rarely do I write reviews over there as I keep my reviews exclusive to my blog.

Hello Brown Potato! I don't write book reviews and neither am I  a bookworm. But I like reading books at my own pace, kind of slow reader who has picked up the pace only recently! :) I am currently reading The fault in our stars. And finished 'No man is an island' by Ruskin Bond before that. I really loved that one, short stories based on friendship and bonding, emphasizing on the human values and goodness in life. Have you read that book? I would love to have some recommendations for similar kind of books.

The usual suspects in this genre are Malgudi Days and any other RK Narayan book. Bond himself wrote a ton of them and you can pick up any book written by him to find any and all values you mentioned.

If you still want to feel good, try Khushwant Singh also, he wrote a good one in Train to Pakistan. Also Khaled Hosseini is not bad at all, probably a bit soapy, but effective if you want to feel 10 pounds heavier.

I'd also add Shantaram to this list. Definitely soapy and terribly feel-good

One of the reasons why I joined Goodreads was for their giveaways. Back in 2008, I got many great books from those giveaways. However, as the number of users has increased many folds now, those have become hard to win. I won books from authors like Sandra Brown. I rely on libgen and freebookspot for ebooks.

Nice to see a bibliophile thread. Returning to the Indiforum after what feels like ages (and possibly might be). Love to read, and I still consider myself a voracious reader. I'm reading Theodor Boone - The Scandal at present. :)

About fifteen years ago, I moved away from fiction, having had my fill of Wodehouse, Doyle, Forsyth and many others. I was a big fan of Dalrymple's and still am but have started focusing on american authors more  - so little of their work reaches India. Was reading Paul Theroux's Dark Star Safari last - anyone interested in virtual travel should look. Enjoyable thread!

First comment on IndiBlogger. I have been a member of Goodreads since 2008. I started blogging to write reviews of the books I read. However, I have not been able to write one since last year. Currently reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking by Jordan Ellenberg. I wish I could afford to buy books....... e-books will have to do for now.

Hello Felicia, I am a member of GoodReads too.. Since 2013..Though I had this affair with books since time I do not remember. And I do understand your emotions about going for eBooks and not being able to afford the books.... Welcome to the broke bibliophile club. In fact, the Shadow Lines is the only physical book that I am reading at the moment, and that too borrowed from my cousin. The Warden is a project Gutenberg eBook that I am reading along with GoodReads group that discusses classics. And The Vegetarian is the eBook that I could not stop myself from reading since it has got so much rave reviews. Yup.. I'm guilty of being a greedy reader! So many books.. So little time.. Can you really blame me!!! 😡 Thanks for dropping by 😊

Hey Maniparna, it's a 1990 edition that I have borrowed from my cousin. I could not find it in amazon or flipkart.I guess the best bet would be to visit College street in Kolkata. We can find all sorts of old treasures there

Hehe. Francis Samagra and Hnada-Bhoda and Bnatul the Great...  Laughing Laughing @Anunoy   Thanks, BP. It's lack of time that I can't invade the college street stalls these days. (and, yes, internet has made us a tad bit lazy as well) Tongue out

Hi Kiren, I have heard good thibgs about Hitchhiker's Guide. How was your experience?

Hi BP,

I recently bought a subscription for Kindle unlimited and I realized how greedy am :) I used to be of the opinion that nothing can replace paper back books. However off late, I appreciate the ease of access with kindle books. Am a book review blogger and  Goodreads reviewer. I usually review books sent directly by publishers and authors. For a few months now, I've kept them on hold in order to read some books of my choice and debut books by fellow bloggers. Am currently hooked with a long pending dream of reading the classic, The Little Prince. There's a good list of books on this thread. Hope we continue to keep this thread on the top.

Hello Nandhini It's always nice to meet another Kindlier. I am also thinking about subscribing to Kindle Unlimited, however I an not very happy with the books offered as I mainly read books in the genre YA / crime / fantasy. However this was about 3-4 months ago.I do not know if the situation has taken a better turn now. Talking about classics, even I had an urge to read some classic and I read "The Taming of the Shrew" which I enjoyed so much that I decided to read another classic "Macbeth". For me, these classics are like treasures hidden in the puzzles and codes of unfamiliar english just waiting to be collected after decoding it. lol... And I am reading The Rhythm of Riddles - a coklection of three stories of Byomkesh Bakshi, the Bengali Sleuth.

Currently reading "The Killer Inside Me" by Jim Thompson. I do a lot of reviews both on my blogs and GoodReads and it is something I enjoy doing.

Hi Brown Potato! Love the name :) I'm a bookworm and there's nothing I like so much as reading a good book. I write reviews too and am currently enjoying my kindle and the freedom it gives me to travel with any number of books. Good to connect with you.

hello fellow kindlier!! n.n

Thanks for the compliment about the name  (blushes red, almost turning to a red sweetpotato)..

I know right, the freedom of carrying as many books as you want without worrying about the weight or space.

That is what made me fall in love with my kindle as well.

I count myself too as an avid reader, though not of serious books. Mostly like fictions. I seldom blog about them. But this time, I read such an impressive novel that I was forced to blog about it, praising it. The novels have been "Shantaram" and it's sequel "The Mountain Shadow" (author:- Gregory David Roberts). I have already written two blog-posts on "Shantaram", and one on "The Mountain Shadow". Tonight I will finish writing the review of "The Mountain Shadow". What I liked about the novels, is that they have been written by a real-life convicted criminal. So it's mostly a first hand account. Also, the author is Australian, but he has written the novels based on his experience in Mumbai, while he was on the run after breaking out of prison in another country. So it's a very interesting set of novels. You may read more about them on my blog.

Written just one review on my blog - The house of silk, Sherlock Holmes Novel by Anthony Horowitz. Currently reading The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins and Us by David Nicholls.

Greetings DS!

I have the book - The House of Silk lying on my shelf for a few weeks, but I am yet to read it. I am skeptical about the plot and if I will like it. I have just completed reading Six of Crows and it was a nice read.

I am looking forward to read The Girl on The Train sometime soon as I have heard nice things about it from my cousin. Please do let me know your views about the plot once you complete reading it.

The house of silk if a brilliant read! Read it, you won't be disappointed! As far the girl on the train is concerned, it's a pretty good book as well. The plot concerns the protagonist, a young girl going through a rough time having split with her boy friend. She passes the same house while on her way to work each day and has co related to a couple whom she notices each day. Then she notices something one day in that house which changes her life forever.

Hi Sweta!! My question to you is, how do you manage to do it! I always feel that on workdays, I neglect my books, though I do try to compensate it on weekends. I generally manage to complete 2 - 3 books a months max. I am currently reading Corrupt by Uday Satpathy, Six of Crows and Seeking Sorrow.

Nice to meet you Haimanti, I would have agreed with you completely a few months back (that is, I preferred physical books). But to be honest now I think there is really no competition between ebooks and real books. The feel of pages ruffling between fingers, the smell of the ink on the paper, as well as the cover art, all are part of the book reading experience when you have a real book. On the other hand, I believe while travelling, nothing beats the comfort of an eBook. as a result I have grown used to my kindle which is easier to carry than 600+ pages. 😁
