Do You want More Blog Comments?

This is the first time I am starting a new topic on his forum. So please excuse me if I do something stupid.

I know IndiVotes are Big. And it is great to have people promoting posts here. But wouldn't you love it if the person also left a comment on your blog?

I enjoy reading posts here and many times want to leave a comment. I actually type long comments plenty of times, only to be hit by a Login screen.

Considering that many blogs here are hosted on blogger or wordpress domains, that is one of the most common login screens.

There are blogs which seem to be on a self hosted domain but eventually ask the person to login to WordPress. And it doesn't stop there!

Some people ask for Facebook login, Disqus login, OpenID login and so on. It never ends.

And it is FRUSTRATING!

So much that I recently wrote a blog post about this on my other blog.

I want to know your experiences with blog comments. Also, I want to know why bloggers feel compelled to ask for these type of logins??

A simple SPAM or Captcha plugin can easily solve issues of junk comments.

People are already pressed for time. Why make them jump hoops and login to 10 different sites?

Please chime in and let me know what you think about this???

And please, spread the word, and ask people to open comments on their blogs!!!!

Thanks..

I have removed all obstacles to commenting on my blog but still have a lower number of comments than I would probably want.  I do reply to the comments and also leave a comment on their blogs.  Would still love more readers.

Quality content, SEO, regular posting, and interaction with fellow bloggers in the blogging world, these matter a lot I think Smile

There! You have one more visitor and one more comment!

@Shantinath "Quality content" Hmm I am not sure about that, I suppose everyone's perception of quality is different and it is probably harder for a blog that does flash fiction to attract a bigger audience.

@SloWord thank you, as I said I do reply and leave a comment too :-)

Seeing your thread, I have enabled anonymous comments on my blog again. So now anyone can comment without the need of logging in. I had this option earlier, but disabled it, because once or twice I got so wonderful comments that I got damn curious to know about the commentator... But since the comment used to be anonymous, I would never know who it was!! Frustrated by it, I had disabled anonymous commenting. But now, I have enabled it back again. Agree with every words you wrote SmileSmile

I don't mind so i have disabled word verification (Captcha) in Blogger comments but so it works fine for verified bloggers but the way blogger works is that anonymous users are still prompted for captcha.

Captcha is fine...otherwise we would get 100s of Spam comments...I am talking about logging into several different sites just to be able to comment. Thanks

The amount of spam comments which blogger blogs get is a minute fraction of the comment spam which wp blogs get. Cool

Eh? WP blogs get more spam than Blogger blogs? Care to share data to prove that? On the per hand, WP blogs have Akismet that works silently, efficiently and does not get in the way of the commenter. Blogger has that ugly captcha thing... It's got better, still a bloody nuisance.

Following are the number of comments I received on my blogs. (includes those identified by Akismet (WP) or Blogger Spam detector)

ALHT`(5+years) - 390

ICSE Java (2 years) - 438

Which is which? Also, bear in mind, ICSE is more easily recognized than ALHT....

In any case, your 2 blogs is statistically too small a sample size for you to be able to make that statement. Sorry, boss, try again.

I hate statistics. I hate data. I hate data mining projects on crime data :x

thoroughly agree with you Pragati...commenting on some blogs is really a task...

I've been through this a few times, link above is just one of those times. It really boggles the mind how bloggers make it so difficult for readers.

thanks for visiting my blog..hope you found it easy to comment :)

Some people ask for Facebook login, Disqus login, OpenID login and so on. It never ends.

And it is FRUSTRATING!

I kind of agree and disagree..

I never use my facebook or any such log in stuff to leave comment on a blog.. Even if I like and want to leave a comment as question or view, if the website asks for any log in, I skip. Because I don't like that..

However in my website / blog, I allow both Facebook and default WordPress comment.. Some people may prefer less hassel of feeling in name, email, website (optional) and use the facebook to comment directly, which they feel (rightly so to some extend) easy to keep track of.. So I keep both.

:D

@Pragati ,I totally agree with you. It hapens with me all the time. I read lots of blog-posts , wrote commnets and then had to face so many hurdles as you mentioned in detail , that I left in vain ( without posting the comments). I hope bloggers / readers don't have such problems while commenting on my blog-posts.

Yes Sujata...it happenned to me yesterday when I read a very controversial post about an abused wife and wrote a long heartfelt reply, only to have it gone!!

And the same thing this morning, after writing a well thought out reply even before I finished my cup of tea. So I finally started this topic here...

Just left a comment on your blog....even though it is on Blogspot..

So, it is just a matter of the right settings, as Ranjith said.

@Pragati , I could not post my comment on your Lavasablog-post, 1st time because of wrong captcha. I succeeded 2nd time. Did you face same problem while posting comment on my blog ?

There are blogs which seem to be on a self hosted domain but eventually ask the person to login to WordPress.

As far as I know, self hosted blogs don't ask to log in to wordpress. They are wordpress blogs with a custom domain. :s

LOL...maybe that's what it is...it is a very raw deal.... I don't know why people buy stuff from wordpress.com....and pay seperately for every little thing they do.

Ranjith
from hyderabad

They buy domain upgrade because mysite.com sounds better than mysite.wordpress.com Wink

Pragati Bidkar

yes..but then they also have to pay for every little thing they want..It is so much easier having a different domain..do you agree...or do you belong in 'they' :)

Ranjith

It depends.

I think yours is a self hosted wordpress blog. If you get more and more traffic, then you need to spend more on hosting. But for wp.com or blogger users, they need not bother about spending money to cater to the increasing visitors.

But you might be having your reasons for liking self hosted wp - like more options for theming, plugins etc.

So, the 'ease' of something depends on what you want.

:)

Having lost a lot of comments myself, I understand what you are saying. May be if everything is done with a single login, it will be better.

Having lost a lot of comments myself

Which site was it? Normally, the comment will be saved and you can post it after logging in :s

May be if everything is done with a single login, it will be better.

Single login as in?

Pragati Bidkar

There is no 'single login'...it is openid or livejournal or google etc. etc. etc. Where does it end...I mean how many logins should we create and keep track of?

Ranjith
from hyderabad

One shouldn't expect all sites to use a single login. Why should a site use some other site's login (fb, g+ etc)?

It is like saying, there shouldn't be multiple networks for bloggers like IB, BA, BM etc. or saying that there should be only a single food blog in the entire world. Wink

Also, I want to know why bloggers feel compelled to ask for these type of logins??

That is because the default option for 'Who can comment?' on Blogger is ' Registered User - includes OpenID '. And people generally go with the defaults.

Thanks Ranjith..so is there a way to change those options? it has been a while sicne I used Blogger. I moved to a self hosted site many years ago.

Ranjith

Yes, of course. That option can be changed.
