Blogging Style -What's your choice ?
Hi Everybody ,
I have very recently signed up with IndiBlogger and have been reading various blogs. It's quite nice and loving the time spent here.
Now coming to the question : I have read a lot of blogs here. What i have noticed is that , in my personal opinion , most of the writing here are primarily in one or two really long paragraphs and without any line breaks, side headings or images as such .
Well , coming from an engineering background , I'm actually trained to write anything anything in short paragraphs with not more than 6-7 sentences each . Line Breaks are provided to improve readility with necessary relevant sub-headings and images that support the content.
Now leaving aside the fact that if the writing style is good , any content can be read easily , which is your general preference ? Do you like blog post with fewer but long pargraphs or posts with side headings, many small paragraphs that can help to read easily ?
Cheers,
Dinakaran
Thanks guys for your replies .
Some of you are right, what you are writing actually decides the blogging style. I have read few novels with long text but still they are interesting and engaging to read. But I have often felt difficulty in reading , when it has complexly made sentences used very often. But i have to agree that splitting them just for the sake of readibility may take away the pleasure of enjoying the narration to some extent.
It also depends on the reader and their personal preferences too. If some one is used to reading novels in general , they will find the long prose easy to grasp while others who do not read will prefer short sentences and text since they are not used to paying attention and want to skip quickly to things that interest them.
Cheers
Great idea...I think i am writing in the style as you mentioned...

To be truthful I agree with the short sentences, more number of paragraphs idea but it really depends on what one is writing. If its a continuous sentence and there is a need to hold the flow then long paragraphs become necessity.
I find that long paragraphs are good for descriptive writing as it keeps the flow going but short paragraphs are good for understandability.
Also longer paragraphs have the problem of grammar being lost midway.
I use longer paragraphs and sentences mostly for fiction description. For non-fiction its best to stick to short sentences as it can help in making a clear point. The longer the sentences, the bigger the misunderstanding and misterpretation in non-fiction.
yes thank you sriram for reading my mind :D
it actually quiet depends on what is the post about. I also when I write tend to make long posts, and I do break things into paragraphs while trying to add a quote or image for the "cosmetic" purpose which at the same time relats to what I'm syaing or something of the event or topic. I seldom to never wrote fictious post but to my understanding in that case the flow has to be maintained, as a reader I wouldn't want to read 10 short sentences you know. But that works (and as said above must be done) if giving something of an opion or other description for better understanding as usually it "scares" people away. I read somewhere on facebook that over 70% of people on an average do not read anyhting beyond 9 lines.
I think he is asking about structuring than overall post length. But talking about length, I would be happier with 10 genuine comments on 1500 word story than 100 comments on a haiku or 55 fiction.
Though I agree that long paragraphs might be a turn-off at times, and prefer to work with short paragraphs, I feel it does depend on the genre, Dinakaran. A short story writer may have a long paragraph at times in his writing, or a post with three long paragraphs that make the entire story. In that case, it's vital to the presentation that he keep it that way. And he won't be looking for giving sub-headings either, or necessary images.
I do however agree that the posts need to be presented right, be it short paragraphs or long ones, with a gap between paragraphs etc.
I think it's pretty basic psychology if there's a LOOOTT of sentences all mashed up together then you tend to skim over or just run away.
I would like to think I write with short paragraphs, and sometimes use images but I don't know.
And unless I have read exceptional pieces previously on the same blog, or it's by someone I know, or I know what's it about and I'm intrigued by it, I generally do not read looong continuous posts. :$
