How often do you ping?
I ping my blog via Ping-O-Matic, Pingler and Pingoat after publishing each post of mine.
Do we need to ping our blogs only after posting a new article or is it a good practice to do it everyday irrespective of any updates that we make? Or is it Ok if we don’t use them at all?
Which pinging services do you use? Share your thoughts on it's uses and how do you go about with it.
Reason: 'update' used as a noun instead of 'updation' - thanks to grammar police Diwakar :)
Me too! Never pinged before. Let me see if it brings about any major jump in my traffic!
i cannot tell what percentage of traffic to niche blogs like tech or entertainment might be coming from feedfarms and directories, but i get about 1 percent of my traffic from directories. i ping after every update, and though eariler i used several pinging services, now i use pingomatic only. pinging without updates does not make sense, since the servers read the last update and if there is a duplicate, your ping is ignored, therefore...
nice to read some ninja tips here though.
note to indigrammar police. lowercase due to key trouble, not laziness or creativity.
Thank you, Subho. Good to finally have someone from blogspot who pings. Yes, pingomatic is the best of the lot acc. to me too and I never miss pinging via that. How exactly should we ping, as in with a .in or .com extension? or does it not matter since both would be pointing the servers to the same content? Any ideas on that?
And a nice note to the IGP there... However, they seem to be busy fighting a hard battle elsewhere.
Well i'd surely ping often if I posted often in the first place. :D
Yeah, now that you are free.. you should definitely be putting your pen to paper more often!
the thing is, my exams start tomorrow. So as usual, i'm back to blogging as well.
lol! You are 'THE XENO', really! Welcome back to the world of blogging and All the best!
lol dude!!
Just go through this thread TSW, should help you get started on a lot of things... I myself have been learning things here.
This pinging business is totally new to me,i shall check it up now-thanks friends.
Do check it out Induji and if you stumble on something new, do let us know too :)
If you have a wordpress, it should do it automatically as far as I know. No need to do it all the time, only after a new post.
Fortunately, my selfhosted Wordpress does this for me and all I have to do is list down all sites that I need my blog posts pinged to! :)
Lucky you, to have that feature! I have to ping manually each time like a robot :(
Which sites are they and how many of them have you listed? Are they free and can they be used for blogspot as well?
As of now, the following are the sites my wordpress pings to.

finally, got it right! :P
Hemal, tell me how has all this helped you? i mean is the labour worth the pains taken>
Hemal, thank you so much for going through so much of trouble for getting this here. That was very nice of you, really appreciate a lot.. thanks
I guess these cannot be used for blogspot blogs and are custom made specifically for wordpress blogs (is it?), coz I tried opening up a few of the sites that you mentioned and it just refuses to open up. The only site that I seem to identify in the list is pinggoat. I have a meager count of 3 pingsites when compared to the long list that you have put down. I wonder how many sites blogspot users generally use for pinging since we do it manually.
@induji For wordpress blogs, pinging is done automatically unlike blogspot. Must be quite useful I guess, otherwise this entire concept wouldn't have existed. Still, I am sure Hemal can throw more light on this.
@Indu about how it has helped me, frankly I have no clue at all. The problem could be that I am not optimally using keywords or the content that I write may not be exiting to many markets, bar India. Why this helps, yes I do have an answer. When you have a good RSS feed subscriber base and / or websites which show your feeds, this Pinging helps. It updates all the servers in the world to fetch the latest information from your blog. If you see throough the list that I have posted above, there are Google Blog reader sites. This is also doubles up as a bot helping google search, as well as update all the RSS feeds linked from a iGoogle page, which is a customizable google page. Unless you have a large reach, doing all of these manually does not make sense.
As Arti said, a self hosted (or free wordpress.com) Wordpress does this automatically. As long as this list is there, you dont have to be worried about pinging this to other servers.
@Arti no problems dear! :) sacchii... :D :D
It does not limit to Wordpres dear, every blog feed / content can be pinged on these sites. There are so many variety of blogs out there, I can list a few already :P There are close to 22 million blogs overall this world and everyone has a story to tell.
- Wordpress
- Moveable Type
- Typepad
- Blogsmith
- Gawker
- Drupal
- Expression engine
Oh my!! Hemal, this is like an entire wikipedia (or IndiWiki ;)) on Ping and its benefits! You always come up with some info entirely new! Thats really nice, though some of it did sail over my head (because of my tech handicap) but quite a bit of it went into it too.. Thank you for the insightful explanation.
I don't know what PINGing is. Someone, explain to me pleaseand also tell me what's the USE of it?
Pinging means advertising ur blog , any updation on ur blogs via these servers , which forward ur RSS feed and updates to various servers
And there are sites just for that?
I mean you can do that here in Indi, FB, Twitter and Pintrest.
Why a totally different site just for that?
Because at once it sends ur ping to several sites at once
Pooja, you can also search wikipedia for "ping"....
Poo, I guess the sites that you mention act more like mediums for notifications to people about our blog updates whereas Ping sites do the same for the machines
Arti, since you are having a travel blog you may need to ping everytime you post a new article on your site. This pinging will let other web tools, sites and search engines to know that you have a new content. Pinging your blog is required only when you have new contents on it. Unless otherwise it is waste of time to ping your blog with old content.
The above mentioned pinging services are fine to use, whereas use the first and best pinging tool, that is weblogs
I personally, dont use pings for my blog anymore. I just keep in my mind to get quality backlinks to my blog, as backlinks are much better for bringing traffic to your blog. Pinging did not helped me that much but for blogs like yours, I would prefer to ping whenever you have a new post so that your new contents be available to search engines from the very first day.
Happy Pinging
Thanks a lot, Janky. I was wondering what all this ping was all about. You are the tech guru here.
I got a bitbut still more clarifications needed. Help na JKY jhi
your welcome TF...and sure Pooja I will like to share the knowledge with you all.....
@Janak Thanks Janak for your detailed reply. Interesting to know that personal blogs do not need to be pinged at all! I learnt about pinging when I was very new to the blogging world and have since then been using it for my blog regularly.
Weblogs is a new name for me, checked it out and will certainly use it from now on. However, I have one question, how should I ping my blog - with .in extension or .com? And what does 'Changes URL' field (in weblogs) supposed to signify?
Thanks
