Photobloggers, photoenthusiasts here: Nikon or Canon

hello all,

I'm starting one of the oldest manufacturer rivalries in photography. It's been pretty big in all the photo grps I've been a part of. I wished to know the tally here.

I'm a loyal Nikon user. I've been dreaming and working about to earn my D300 myself. Only thing is after I buy it, I wouldn't have enough for a Nikkor so I might have to get past my loyalty and buy a cheaper Sigma macro.

I realise there' d be other users as well, Olympus, Pentax, Sony etc. you guys are welcome too..have a shout.

so what do you see through? Nikon or Canon.

I think more than a camera the photographer knowledge in photograpgy is important.

I think both are equally important Mr.Rao. Its only that we chose to talk about equipment here. What's a thought without a paper..er..blog. What's a photographer without his camera!

Mr Rao, if I give you a bad camera you cannot take a good picture. I am very much for what Varun said. What's a photographer without his camera!

and tell im if I'm right - I feel Canon are preffered only for the price in any segment. the PowerShots are cheaper than the Coolpix anyday. same case in the entry level d-slrs.

I think the only place where canon score is that they brought out the full-frame 1d s before Nikon ventured into full frames.

Even the Canon lenses are a bit cheaper than the Nikkor ones as far as I have heard.

I have to somewhat agree with you. I know people who ditched a Nikon to buy a Canon not because of price, but also user friendliness...

One of my friend try to sell his Nikon back to the retailer coz it was giving problems. Thought this might be true for Canon as well, but I have not come across one issue for Canon.

That is very much the reason why I prefer much, for a Canon any day.

I am talking about a promsumer! Ha, and I told you guys that I have not used an SLR. Lets just not make this "exiting topic" a pro SLR

I think in the Mid range, there is no one who can beat a Canon. I have been using Canon for a long time and I have not got a single issue / problem with 'em, and in the two later upgrades!

true Hemal,

but a Nikon or a Minolta user might have also not had any troubles. Canon is a big brand yeah. But I think in the range of Compacts and Prosumers, so are the Olympus Mjus and the Finepix. I believe the main reason Canon are dominant in the mid range is the price. They have a wide range even at a lower rate. It's pure marketing.

Can photographic quality be maintained at low costs? logically thats not possible. So, its only the consumer base that's made Canon the best, and Sachin Tendulkar lately. See, Nikon doesn't really need big endorsments. They keep doing great still. :)

my liking to Canon does not have anything to do with sachin. i never go for celebrity endorsements and buy blindly. What ever quality my 7.1mp cam can give is enuf for me.

Yes, i am not telling that Nikon and Minolta are not good. But I have not seen or heard much about em. But for me, a Kodak is No No

I've been a Nikon fan all my life - a Nikon FA back in college and a D50 now. Varun, before you go for the D300,  check out Ken Rockwell's review of the D90. Never sacrifice on the quality of the lens - it's more important than the camera itself!

As for all you canon fans - did you know that NASA uses Nikon equipment in the space shuttles? Smile

Thanks Renie. The D90 sure is a very good camera. A cheaper option compared to the D300. I've been following the reviews and I find it great. Only thing is, ever since I started shooting snaps at the Chennai Open and after clicking local cricket matches here in Australia and a few rugby games as well, I chose to go deeper into sports photography. and for that, D90 isn't the best cam as it does 4.5fps.

the D300 on the other hand, does 6fps. and with the external battery pack, it does 8fps. that's a mind blowing speed and great for sports photography.

good to see another Nikon loyalist!

Not sure if I may be right saying this but, all default choices seem to be Canon, like Blogspot here. Nikon's like WP. we know its the best. Laughing

I couldn't agree with you more - both on the D300 being better for sports, as well as Nikon being the best. Smile
