Australia series beckons Team India now. Its a very important away series after they were beaten 4-0 in England. What should be the

  • team selection
  • pre match strategies
  • who should play, who dropped
  • live scores, commentary
  • results discussion, etc..

We have been whitewashed again, really has been a pathetic performance by team India.

Will the ODI's give something to cheer about??

I'm sure DS will edit this later, but in the meanwhile, please shift to the ODI thread and spread the positivity again there in regards to that! Let's not dwell too much at present on the Test squad, and cheer on the ODI squad when they begin Part 2 of their Agneepath down under! Cheers!

what a series it was ^^ , the team that was ranked #1 in tests jus a couple of months ago is being whitewashed by other teams :)

what a fall :)

is this the after effect of IPL??  that Indians got unbeatable at home cause we paly here all the time and became thrash abroad? :)

can't blame the older players for this anyway, age may have caught up with them now :)

and as fo Aus :) they saved India the shame of being defeated 3 tests in a row by innings margin by batting 1 more innings :) which was actually never necessary and even they might have known that. and Sachin's 100th century?? was it more important than India winning? that people were all eagerly waiting to see it happen

Leo
from Bengaluru

Its still ranked #1 if u count only home form Innocent

IPL? It got over long back. 9 months ago. I dont think blaming a 80 day stretch of T20 for a whitewash 9 months down the road is an excuse or reason for a whitewash three quarters of the year later!

Unbeatable at home? Possibly. Even England are strongest at home, coz the support is so. Even in India, the support for India is such. But in the end, its how the team plays.

No blame on the older players? Of course not. They're just earning their place, like the others are. But 38 years of age.. surely it'd catch them up. Do we have their replacementes ready and blooded? Sadly, of course not.

Aussies batting again in second innings of last test? Not to save India shame. No. Not at all.. To give their bowlers a rest. And it was necessary. Indian top order was quite well rested when their first innings ended at 272 a/o, and Siddle & co were tired having bowled most of the day. So enforcing follow on would have been giving India the advantage, and their top order a go at the tired bowlers. Clarke was smart.. but make no mistake, 298 runs defeat is still quite big, even if there is no "innings & " preceding it.

I agree with TF. It'd be poetic justice if he were to retire with 99 hundreds! a 100th 100 in a lost test in a series white wash is worthless to him too.

DS

Agree with Leo except the first two points. India are number 1 considering home form? We could not defeat a young West Indian team by 3-0!!! And IPL is as such not bad but our players postpone surgeries to play in it. They play with injuries to earn quick money making the injuries more big. They play all the matches when they can miss out on a few matches. I think of IPL as a monster eating the game of cricket. Our board forces other boards to send players. Players like Gayle are ignored by WI because of IPL.
Leo

Disagree on the Gayle part, DS. He was sought by IPL team of Bangalore only after his negotiations and etc. with the WICB didn't come to fruition. Also, most of the WI players in current team are 30 or under, with Gayle, Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash being major exceptions. WICB are rotating its players nicely. And while their results may be mixed, holding the "then" top ranked team in Tests to two draws was no little achievement!

Finally Indian team was leaderless and rudderless down under.  Anyways it is a good wake up call for the team not to pat themselves under the false pretext of being No1 test team.  The time has come to blood rank youngsters who may not be featuring in the current team.  Indian selectors have to sit and think of team for the future we can stretch Sachin for another 3 years, Shewag another 2 to 3 years, Dhoni another 3 years, Gambhir another 4 years, Bhajji seems to aiming for comeback for another year or so, Yuvraj too with his health problems may not be fit candidate for long term in test.  Zaheer khan is getting older and slower, Ishant looked jaded.  Test cricket is a totally a different ball game.  It requires patience, stamina, technique, and pride to play Test format, can we see some unknown names into the team of reserves.

Leo
from Bengaluru

Indian team was leaderless.. Yes indeed, Umeshji. And no, they lost that status long back, after the 0-4 drubbing they had vs England.  I agree with you that we need to think of blooding the youngsters like Virat, Rohit, Pujara etc. But why that "stretch" needed? Sachin for 3 years? He's turning 39 this April. By the time he's stretched to 42 and making the already near invincible records even more out of reach, another young talent like he once was, that talent is missing out a chance. He has been, and still is, a legend, an icon in Indian cricket, and an ambassador for the game like no one else possibly can be. But even he needs to call time soon IMO. We need to see some new names, the likes of the Rainas, the Pujaras and the Aarons play more. If we're waiting for the experienced to retire, and they never do, the youngsters would never receive a chance.

DS
from Mumbai

If Sachin and Sehwag play for another 3-4 years then either of Badrinath or Pujara or Rahane can retire!!!! Dhoni looks lost in test matches both as a captain and as a batsman. His crude technique is not suited against the requirements of test match cricket.
Leo
from Bengaluru

At times, I dont mind his technique. Calmness in face of defeats and controversies is good for a captain. And it'll keep others calm too. But I think he should also accept that there is a problem and solve it, rather than say, it's okay. We lost this, but we can win the next. He said it after Melbourne, Sydney and Perth tests... just didn't happen. If he's retiring, I think it's okay.. We can think of bringing another talented player in.

Hey, we will bounce back!! Its just a matter of time, happens with the best of us, it a passing phase! Lets stand with them and support them instead of bashing them like this, will we?

TF Carthick

@Arti - if they are like you and me, all that is fine. When they get so much money, celebrity status and all that when they win, they must be ready for brickbats when they lose badly.

I am more for a balanced approach. But that would mean less money and fanfare when they win also. Can't have one without the other.

Arti
from Mumbai

True TF, i agree.

But the point here is, who gives them all that money, celebrity status and fame? Who goes over the moon when they win those trophies for our country and make us proud?

We are wrong in doing all the fanfane, hype and hoopla then, and we are wrong in over-criticizing/bashing-them/writing-them-off like this now. And two wrongs never make a right. In my opinion, It is not entirely their fault. Too much presssure for a game, and you cannot keep winning all the time. The so called fans of the Indian cricket team are also to blame for this pathetic performance overseas.

Leo
from Bengaluru

Arti, we will "bounce back" is what we've been saying ever since  the 2010 tour of South Africa.. That's not right. Forget the celebrity status, the wealth, the hype, the hoopla, all that! Let them earn the least.. 1-1 vs RSA (3 tests), 1-0 vs WI (3 tests, one of which they gave up when they where in winning position), 0-4 vs ENG and then this 0-4 vs AUS.. These are not indicative of a passing phase. We're fans, admirers of the game of cricket, and as much as the opposition against them played well, they played that much more poorer! We cheered them each of these series, prayed they would do well, even prayed for rain so that they won't be losing! If we did all that, then we got every right to tell them that they need to do better! We are the people who go over the moon when they win.. yes. But winning the World Cup (in the Indian subcontinent again) is one thing, to take that form out of the subcontinent and show that championship material there, that's a whole different ball-game!

We are to blame too, for we expect. It's been 2 test wins in 13 tests, 8 successive losses, and 10 matches overall since India won a test away from Indian soil. One or two wins away, just to say, we did that. That's not too much to expect. Not at all.

DS
from Mumbai
Arti, its a passing phase, I agree. But every problem must be handled with a cool head and there is a problem that the team refuses to accept. If all the senior players retire at the same time then it will leave a big vacuum to fill. They should phase out and youngsters like Badrinath, Rahane, Rohit, Pujara should be given a chance. But unfortunately our team thinks ALL IZZ WELL!!!
Leo
from Bengaluru

All izz well? Quite the opposite, not that they are worrying. If they're quoting that they beat Aussies at home 2-0 and won the world cup every time they lose, then the tactics for overseas, away from the subcontinent will never develop at all. Time to add a word and say, ALL IZZ NAUT WELL.. and try to remove that word soon.

Leo

OK. Last day last rites? Hilarious wickets! Kohli running himself out with five balls to spare.. Dravid for a change not being bowled.. Last innings of Tendulkar going out glove pad.. I wonder how it reached last day...

Tendulkar I hope won't get the century in a ODI vs Aus or Sri.. If all goes well, and governments approve, the next series for India, (Tests) is Pakistan in India. (March/April). It'd be the ultimate time to get his century.. Home crowd, fiercest rivals...

DS

LOL, I hoped and wished that he misses his century vs West Indies so he could get it on the Boxing Day!! So much for that!! Anyways India dont play a test series outside the sub continent in the next 2 years. All home series for us.

Guess even DS has abandoned this thread now with the performances dipping Tongue out 229 for 6 at tea is a flattering scoreline, considering they were falling fast again. Its Kohli, who's got some stick for weak performances in the first three matches, who seems to be showing signs of life. VVS again lowing out. Well, atleast the youngsters Saha and Virat, and the all-rounder spinner, Ashwin are showing the future has a little hope.. If they can get us past the follow on, it'll be wonderful.

DS

8 down in a blink of an eye. Yes Virat has played well in last 2 tests a positive sign for us.
DS

Kohli ton, too little too late... Good for future though.
Leo
from Bengaluru

One player does not a team make, DS. Kohli batted well.. where was Laxman (18), Viru (18 from 18 balls), Dravid (1, and bowled yet again), even a experienced tailender like Zak (first ball duck, playing an aggressive shot when he should and could have tried to hang around). If one would have stuck,  a partnership would have happened, and it'd be atleast some more runs lesser in the conceded lead, if not taking a lead....

DS
from Mumbai

By Good for the future, I meant that atleast we have a positive to take home.
Leo
from Bengaluru

Yes. Now it needs to be developed. Slowly, phase the youngsters in. Blood them. Give them the feel of conditions. Agreed that Kohli knows Australia, since he won the U-20 World Cup there. But still, tests are different.

Leo

I guess the best gift the Team India can give the fans in this kind of batting and fielding and field setting etc... is for them to get all out tomorrow.. so some of us supportive Indian cricket fans are saved the sadness of watching them play like this. If they're not embarrassed by conceding a 600+ target after getting the first 3 wickets cheaply again, and then losing two wickets too.. ( 18 from 18 is ODI or T20 style batting, right? I mean, if u gonna do it, do it consistently like Warner did last time.)... no wonder Tendulkar was given the ODI chance.. wonder if... (and a very big IF) he gets that elusive hundredth 100 in this Adelaide 1st Innings, would the BCCI selection panel decide OK, thats it.. he got it, now no need for him to play the ODIs. We can send in some younger player...

I so agree with the "experts" of the game when they say BCCI should've sought replacements for the likes of Dravid, Tendulkar and VVS earlier.. right now, no one close to their caliber is in the wings.. or if they were, they've not been groomed by gettings some more opportunities. Even in "dead rubber" tests, where the result doesn't affect the series whatsoever, the same old team is retained over and over.. if someone mentions ratings, I'll point out.. when before the England series, they played West Indies in the Carribbean, they accepted a draw when a win was very much likely, with wickets in hand. That's the start of the way down I felt. After that, the winning mentality has seems to have reduced. Just missing Praveen Kumar, or Irfan Pathan or Varun Aaron can't be cited as a problem either. They're all fantastic players.. but when the other 10 players arent clicking, one player wont made much difference in result, just maybe a less embarrassing scoreline.

DS

Sachin looks like an extremely burdened man.
Leo
from Bengaluru

Burdened? Yes.. I heard someone from the IT dept saying there are thousands of posts that are drafted before every match India plays, expecting Sachin to score that 100 in that match. We all want him to as well. But so much expectation on him seems to be that. He himself rejects that he's thinking of the landmark. but he is. else he wont be fuming so much after last match's LBW decision which Hawkeye itself told to be true..

DS

And He is against DRS too. Belittles him really. He is putting undue pressure on himself. As Harsha Bhogle once said, every run he scores is a new world record! Does one century make him a greater or lesser player than what he already is? NO
Leo
from Bengaluru

He is actually unsure of whether he wants DRS actually. There were reports in newspapers that he went and visited the company that developed it, hawkeye n hotspot n all. And that he was quite happy with what he saw. One century may not make him lesser or greater.. but he is obsessed of sorts with that century. I dont think he can focus properly till he fulfills it. Maybe its the nation's expectation that has put that burden on him, but he's looking lost, trying to either play like Sehwag, or like Dravid. I didn't feel he paced his innings much in the series. Though from the senior department, he was the best performer..

1. India now setting realistic targets for themselves. Just two wickets tomorrow, is their target. Great:) 2. After loosing 3 tests convincingly, not one test going to the 5th day and playing poorly on the 1st day they are not embarrassed. Yes, our players dont need to be embarrassed, we the fans are ashamed and embarrassed. What a press conference:)

I personally feel that Laxman will be given a final opportunity to prove his worth, Rohit might come in to replace Dravid.  Ojha for Vinay is a good change.  Dravid may be used as a keeper instead of Dhoni, if he scores it might be a bonus.  I feel Raina should replace Gambhir.  I feel this team can force a draw if not victory in the final test.

I think we should make changes for the last test.

My Suggestions...

Rohit for Laxman

Ojha for Vinay

Rahane for Gambhir/Sehwag (Think it can be Gambhir since Sehwag will be captaining)

Saha for MSD (forced)

Why Ojha for Vinay? Why not Ashwin? And Gambhir did perform, no? Laxman strangely is refusing to retire. All the Indian greats don't want to sign off in style. They want to be humiliated and kicked out. But I will be happy if Laxman plays, scores a double century and then announces retirement.
